The Society was started by a cardiac surgeon Dr Jacob Cherian, trained in England. On their return to India, he and his wife Dr Mary Cherian spent their entire lives with the underprivileged and completely transformed the region. For the colossal services he rendered to the nation, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1999. He had started 18 institutions in all, including an Engineering college, the first Polytechnic in the area, an Arts, Science & Commerce college and a 350-bed hospital that has served 4.11 million patients just in its outpatient department and treated over 4 lakh cancer patients, many of them free of cost.
